Recovery of Hematological Changes Following One Unit Blood Donation in Korean

Abstract
This study was designed to evaluate the recovery period of hematological changes after one unit blood donation in Korean. Hemoglobin, serum iron and serum ferreting levels were tested from one day to 4 or 12 weeks following blood donation of 6 young Korean men and 5 women.
The results were as follows.
1. In men, hemoglobin level was relatively normalized to original one after 2 weeks following blood donation. However, hemoglobin level was not returned and remained only to 93% of original pre-donated value in women until 12 weeks after blood donation. And one high school girl of 5 women showed iron deficiency anemia of moderate degree.
2. Serum iron level was decreased in both men and women. Especially, its value was maintained to low level in women following 12 weeks after blood donation.
3. Value of serum ferreting was also decreased to low level. After 12 weeks following one unit blood donation, its value was not normalized to original level in women.
These results indicate that abstinence period of blood donation should be 3 to 6 months and supplemental iron therapy might be required, especially in Korean female blood donors.
